Grassfed Beef Farm Tour to Take Place in Palisade, MN
Folks with an interest in grassfed beef production are invited to attend a pasture walk and workshop at the Jane and Joe Jewett farm near Palisade, MN on Monday, October 22 from 9:30am-2:30pm.
Jane Jewett has an NCR-SARE Farmer-Rancher grant to document finishing weights and time to finish for grassfed beef steers. Three other farmers in Minnesota are cooperating on this project, and preliminary results will be presented. Betsy Weiland, Minnesota SARE co-coordinator, will present information about the SARE grant programs.
Scott Kittleson from the Aitkin NRCS office and Tom Gervais, area NRCS grazing specialist, will talk about best practices for grazing systems and NRCS programs that support grazing of livestock. Jane Jewett and Troy Salzer of Carlton County Extension will discuss marketing options for local beef, the regulations for wholesale and retail sales, and other considerations. Jane’s “meat trailer” for sales at the Grand Rapids Farmers’ Market will be on site and open for viewing. H. Wayne Martin, Alternative Livestock Systems Specialist with University of Minnesota Extension, will be on hand as a resource person and can answer questions not only about beef, but goats, sheep, swine, and poultry as well.
The planned pasture walk may require up to a mile of total walking, so please plan footwear accordingly.
There is no cost for this event. Please bring a bag lunch. Dessert and beverages will be provided.
This workshop is a sponsored collaboration through NCR-SARE, Natural Resources Conservation Service, University of Minnesota Extension, and the Midwest Forage Association.
